BBC issues apology over handling of Russell Brand complaints
The BBC has issued an apology to staff over the handling of misconduct complaints over Russell Brand.
The corporation conducted an internal review over Brand's time there, notably during his work on BBC Radio 2 and 6Music between 2006 and 2008.
The findings have now been published, which considered the complaints of eight individuals – two of which were made at the time.
The report concluded that one complaint "was not dealt with effectively" at the time, though found "no evidence that [Brand's] behaviour was raised with management formally at the time".
However, it added: "It is clear from interviews conducted as part of this review, that there were other concerns, but those involved felt unable or unwilling to raise these at the time as they felt the concerns would not be taken seriously and the systems for making complaints were not as clear as they are now.
"They have been able to air these concerns during this review, so the BBC can learn from this."
It also said that Brand had a sexual encounter in a toilet and that no complaint was made at the time. However, the person said that while the encounter was consensual they "felt that Russell Brand had abused his position and taken advantage of them".
In a statement, the BBC said: "We want to thank the individuals who have participated, as we know that it has not been easy to speak out about some of the issues the review addresses."
It said it was of "great concern that some of these individuals felt unable to raise concerns about Russell Brand’s behaviour at the time" and that the BBC "has apologised to them as part of this review".
It added: "It is also clear that there were compliance inadequacies on some of Russell Brand’s Radio 2 shows which led to content being aired that would not be broadcast today. Russell Brand left the BBC in 2008 following a high-profile editorial breach.
"As has been reported, there is an ongoing police investigation into Russell Brand. The BBC has been in contact with the Metropolitan police throughout the review and they have seen the report.
"The BBC acknowledges that Russell Brand categorically denies all public allegations made against him."
Digital Spy has reached out to Brand's representatives over the BBC's report, but is yet to receive a response.
In 2023, allegations of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse by the comedian surfaced as part of an investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches. Brand has denied all allegations.
