George Alagiah has vowed to continue to present the news as normal after being told his cancer has returned.

The BBC newsreader was given the devastating update two years after completing treatment, but will still be seen on tonight's (January 15) News at Six as normal.

He was originally diagnosed in 2014 with stage four bowel cancer and continued to battle with the disease until October 2015 when his treatment finished. The presenter even returned to work two weeks later.

Taking to Twitter, the 62-year-old told fans and followers: "Always knew cancer could come back but still tough dealing with disappointment. Harder for my family. I know what I have to do: stay calm, stay content, stay fit and let doctors do their best."

He added in a statement: "My brilliant doctors are determined to get me back to a disease-free state and I know they have the skill to do just that.

"I learned last time around how important the support of family and friends is and I am blessed in that department. I genuinely feel positive as I prepare for this new challenge."

BBC News at Six editor Paul Royall confirmed that Alagiah would be fronting tonight's broadcast despite the diagnosis.

Alagiah's colleagues and those in the news industry also praised the popular journalist and passed on their messages of support.
