BBC News ditches desks as Huw Edwards unveils studio revamp

Watch: Huw Edwards gives a tour of new BBC News studio

Huw Edwards strutted the 'catwalk' as he showed off the new-look BBC News studio.

The revamp for 'Studio B' at New Broadcasting House in London — which the Welsh newsreader admitted is 'much bigger' than the previous one — is thought to have cost as much as £5million.

Edwards, 60, came out from behind his desk to give viewers the grand tour on the BBC News at 10 saying: "I'm very excited about it."

The news anchor wore a blue polo neck sweatshirt and tight-fitting trousers, in place of his more formal suit and tie to show off the catwalk style of the new studio.

Studio B — which will be used for BBC News at Six, BBC News at 10, London news bulletins and some political programmes — features three separate catwalk stages with high definition screens.

Edwards said: "It allows us to do far more things than the previous studio allowed us to do. It allows us to explain things in much more detail, with the kind of images that are much more clear."

Using a touch screen on one of the smaller platforms to 'animate details of a story', he insisted it was "Not just toys to play with; advanced technology which allows us to tell the story in a more impactful way.

"In a way that is more illuminating, hopefully."

Edwards added: "We want you to enjoy it, so we hope you will."

He opened the news sitting behind a curved glass desk before standing up and walking along a long curved catwalk and screen that runs the length of one side of the studio.

To demonstrate another platform with a tall screen in the centre of the studio Edwards was shown leaning nonchalantly on the door of Number 10 Downing Street.

He said: "If there's been a big event in Downing Street or something affecting the Prime Minister it's almost as if we're in the street itself. "

While Edwards was clearly delighted with the new Studio B it will leave newsreaders very exposed.
