The BBC has released the first clip for the highly-anticipated second series of Wolf Hall, with the action picking up following the execution of Claire Foy’s Anne Boleyn.

The acclaimed historical drama, first released in 2015, followed Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) as he operated in the court of King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis) during Tudor England.

Nine years in the making, the follow-up series - called The Mirror and the Light - picks up immediately in the aftermath of Anne’s beheading as the monarch prepares to wed Jane Seymour (Kate Phillips).

Ahead of the series premiere on Sunday (November 10), the BBC has shared a near-five minute clip from the new series, with Anne’s execution - which was depicted in the finale of the first series - being intercut with Henry and Jane’s wedding.

Foy, who was nominated for a Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice and BAFTA TV Award for her performance, isn’t listed in the cast for The Mirror and the Light, though there are returning stars in the shape of Jonathan Pryce and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

There are also returns for Peter Straughan and Peter Kosminsky as writer and director respectively, with the latter expressing his excitement at the opportunity of adapting Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed novel.

“The Mirror and the Light picks up exactly where Wolf Hall ended, with the execution of Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn,” said Kosminsky. “I'm overjoyed to be able to reunite the extraordinary cast we were lucky enough to assemble for Wolf Hall.

“[The team includes the] brilliant Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis, with the original creative team of Gavin Finney (DOP), Pat Campbell (Designer) and Joanna Eatwell (Costume Designer). We are all determined to complete what we started – and to honour the final novel written by one of the greatest literary figures of our age, Hilary Mantel.”

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light premieres on Sunday November 10 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
