BBC Shetland fans 'work out' who killed Tosh's friend after spotting 'clue'

Shetland opened last week with a dramatic case for DI McIntosh and DI Calder to solve.

The BBC show is back for a ninth series, and opened with DI Calder being held at gunpoint by a young man who had seemingly killed his own brother. Whilst Calder (Ashley Jensen) managed to escape unharmed, a new case soon troubled DI Tosh McIntosh (Alison O'Donnell) and Calder when Tosh's friend Annie was found dead.

Annie and her young son went missing, before her body was later found in a construction site which belongs to her estranged husband Ian. She was found after her son managed to make his way to a nearby farm and the police were called.

He had blood on him, but it was unsure whose blood it was. When Annie was later found dead, it seemed obvious that she must have been killed by the prime suspect - but is that really the case?

Speaking about those scenes, Alison told Radio Times: "In those moments, you stop being a copper and you just become a person. When it's your friend lying there, covered in blood, it's the personal stuff that really bubbles to the surface. What rushes in is, 'What about her son?' And Tosh sort of wobbles for about five seconds.

"But then she's on the phone to Billy, because you have to. And I think that's something that you learn as a parent. Even when everything's burning around you, you still have to be the person in charge. And so she has a very brief moment to be the friend, and then she's got the police hat back on again and she's having to deal with logistics, the practicalities."

However, one fan is convinced they've worked out who killed Annie in a shocking twist.

"This better not be another one of those "the kid did it" whodunnits. #Shetland," one wrote, whilst another guessed: "Surely it's not the kid who killed her?" Whatever happens, it'll no doubt be another gripping episode.

Tosh star Alison has teased that her partner Donnie gets caught up in the investigation as he is also close friends with Ian, with Alison admitting things are very different for the protagonist by the end of the series.

She warned: "At the conclusion of the series, her relationships are not what they were when the series begins."
