Springwatch viewers were upset by scenes broadcast in tonight's episode.

Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan were joined by Iolo Williams in Dorset on the latest episode of the popular BBC wildlife programme. Michaela explained it had been a good week for the nest but warned there was some less positive news as they were about to show a predation - the killing by one living organism of another for food.

She said: "I know they're not always easy to watch, but this is really interesting." The team focused on a group of blackbird chicks as Michaela explained: "They were feeding, they were growing.

"We thought all was good. They hunker down and then just watch what happens. Out of nowhere comes two feet, but what is that predator?"

It was later revealed that the predator was a buzzard and Michaela was taken aback by how it had managed to find its way into a bramble bush. The buzzard took three chicks and a vole ate the remaining chick in the nest.

Viewers following the show on social media platform X were taken aback by the scene. A user said: "Bloody hell #springwatch is brutal tonight. A buzzard has just made off with three blackbird chicks and a vole has tried to feast on the remaining dead one."

JD posted: "Gutted to see the blackbird nest predated. Got a real soft spot for the blackbirds, they’re such an industrious creature"

Conky said: "Once again the predation upsets me. I'd be a s**t Buzzard." Paul commented: "That was so dark with flesh eating shrew acting so nonchalant after buzzard did death kill."

The episode was also a celebration of Roy Dennis and fans were emotional as Chris was reunited with the environmentalist. Adam said: "Aww, seeing Chris choked up like that has made me tear up. Bless him."
