BBC weather expert says 'I've not seen anything like it in my career' in Storm Eowyn warning

A BBC weather expert has issued a warning over Storm Eowyn as it heads for the UK. Very strong winds of up to 90mph, heavy downpours and snow are predicted to hit many areas this week.

The Met Office has issued a string of weather alerts - with all of England covered my at least one warning on Friday, January 24. Weatherwoman Judith Ralston said she has not 'seen anything like it in her career'.

She described Eowyn as a 'major storm' as she issued a warning to others. The Glasgow-based BBC weather presenter said people should make sure they keep up-to-date with Met Office forecasts and weather warnings in the coming days.

Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, she said: "This is one major storm. I’ve not seen anything like it my career. Please keep up to date with the Met Office warnings, there are numerous right now including an amber high wind."

The Met Office has issued seven weather warnings for wind, rain and snow. The Met Office said: "Storm Éowyn will begin to influence the UK’s weather early on Friday, with strengthening winds initially in southwestern parts of the UK with accompanying heavy rainfall. This will quickly spread northeast to the rest of the UK during Friday morning.

"There is also a chance of snow over Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland as the system initially bumps into cold air, however much of this will quickly change to rain as milder air moves in."

All the weather warnings in place

  • A yellow weather warning for wind will be in force between 7am and 6pm on Thursday, January 23. It will cover London and the south east of England, south west England and Wales.

  • A yellow weather warning for rain will be in force between midnight and 9am on Friday, January 24. It will affect south west England, Wales and the West Midlands.

  • A yellow weather warning for wind will come into force at 5am and end at 3pm on Friday, January 24. Regions affected include the East Midlands, east of England, London and south east of England, south west England and the West Midlands.

  • An amber weather warning for wind will be in force between 6am and 9pm on Friday, January 24. The East Midlands, north east of England, north west England, northern Ireland, Wales, Yorkshire and Humber, and parts of Scotland will be affected.

  • A yellow weather warning for wind will come into force at midnight and end at 11.59pm on Friday, January 24. It will affect parts of Scotland, the East Midlands, London and south east England, north east England, north west England, northern Ireland, south west England, Wales, the West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.

  • A yellow weather warning for snow will be in place from 3am until noon on Friday, January 24. Parts of Scotland, north east England, north west England, and Yorkshire and Humber will be impacted.

  • A yellow weather warning for wind will be in effect from midnight until 3pm on Saturday, January 25. It will only cover parts of Scotland.
