BBC Weather explains when heatwaves will return to UK after wet spring

The BBC Weather team have broken their silence over claims heatwaves could hit in the summer of 2024. The Beeb has spoken out after a disappointing start to summer, with May a mixed bag of warmer days (with highs of 24C at times) and plenty of showers too.

The BBC Weather team states: "The weather is forecast to remain rather cool and showery for much of the first half of June. Forecasting beyond that timescale is fraught with difficulty. Tiny changes in the atmosphere now can be magnified over days and weeks to bring massively different outcomes.

"At the moment it does seem fairly likely that summer will be warmer than average overall, but rain is also expected to feature. If you are making plans further ahead it is worth staying up to date with our monthly outlook and checking the forecast closer to the time on the BBC Weather app."

The BBC says it could prove "summery" after mid-June, saying: "Generally it will remain rather changeable across the UK as temperatures will fall on or slightly below seasonal average next week. Later in the month there is a chance for summery conditions to develop."

It adds: "In the next forecast we will see whether the summery outlook will continue at the end of June and into the beginning of July." Spring 2024 was both the UK’s hottest on record and the wettest in nearly 40 years, provisional Met Office figures show.

Across the three months of meteorological spring – March, April and May – the average mean temperature for the UK was 9.37C, beating the previous record of 9.12C set in 2017. A Met Office spokesperson said: “Higher than average temperatures in March and May, either side of a slightly warmer than average April, means that spring 2024 is the warmest on record according to mean temperature.

“Despite the warmth, sunshine hours during the season were well below average, though not troubling any national records. High overnight temperatures through the season have helped to push the mean temperature figure for the season beyond the previous record, while it has also been a wet spring for many.”
