BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood has opened up about the age-gap in her relationship with her toyboy husband. The weather presenter walked down the aisle for the second time in her life following her first marriage which naturally "ran its course".

The 62-year-old started dating serving police officer Steve Randal around seven years ago, and they are now married. The pair exchanged vows on December 27 last year in what she described as a "small intimate wedding".

Carol has recently addressed the age difference with her current spouse, who is 48 - giving them approximately a 14-year gap. She emphasised that if it were her husband who was older, the discrepancy wouldn't stir as much discussion.

In a chat with the Daily Express, Carol said: "If our ages were the other way around, nobody would ever mention it. I've had a few comments but I don't care.

"We've moved on from the days when he might have been described as my toyboy or people might call me a cougar. We're happy together and that's all that matters."

Returning to BBC Breakfast after her wedding day, Carol said: “I cannot tell you how fabulous it’s been! I would not change a thing about the day. It was very small as well and intimate, so you didn’t have to worry that Auntie Nelly didn’t have a glass of sherry in her hand! It was brilliant.”

Carol was previously married to Scottish businessman Jimmy Kirkwood for a quarter of a century, but they decided to divorce in 2008. Although the reasons behind their split remain unknown, Carol did add: “It was a transition between being married and being divorced and suddenly being on your own.

"All of that was new to me at the ripe old age in my forties. You were a wee bit lost but you get on with it.”
