The Beach Bum trailer: Matthew McConaughey and Zac Efron star in new stoner comedy film

Matthew McConaughey and Zac Efron take centre stage in the trailer for their psychedelic new film.

The Beach Bum, the latest offering from Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine, sees McConaughey playing a character called Moondog, alongside Jonah Hill, Isla Fisher and Snoop Dogg.

Its plot remains vague, but going by the trailer, cinemagoers should expect a drug-addled delve into the unpredictable: the one-line synopsis reads: “A rebellious stoner named Moondog lives life by his own rules.”

Also starring in the film is Jimmy Buffet, the American singer, and Martin Lawrene who is currently filming the third Bad Boys film alongside Will Smith and Efron’s former High School Musical co-star, Vanessa Hudgens.

Korine shot to fame with the 1995 film Kids and enjoyed acclaim with Spring Breakers, which also starred Hudgens as well as James Franco and Selena Gomez. It was released in 2012.

The Beach Bum hit headlines when it was revealed that Snoop Dogg swapped McConaughey’s prop weed with real marijuana while filming a six-minute scene.

The film is yet to acquire a UK release date, but it will premiere at Texan film festival South by Southwest in March.
