A beauty expert has shared one skincare product you should stop using in autumn. As the days get darker and colder, the air gets drier and so, too does our skin.

This can cause our skin to become cracked and flaky as it loses water. But you don't have to put up with discomfort until summer, a celebrity skincare expert has shared.

Scott McGlynn, who to the Instagram account @scottmcglynnofficial, regularly shares wellness advice with his 245,000 followers on social media and said one item should be removed from your regimen in the colder months.

The 37-year-old advisor has seen everything – from nightmare spots to at-home filler – and is well-placed to share the best routines for troublesome skin.

In a recent video, which has gained thousands of views, he said you should wave goodbye to cleansers that strip the skin when the weather gets colder.

He explained: "The first thing is to switch your cleanser to a hydrating cleanser because we don't want to be stripping any oils from the skin. We want to keep it very hydrated and glowy through this autumn period."

The beauty guru recommends the Hydration Cleansing Balm from Elemis, which he uses in his own routine. "I absolutely love it for keeping my skin nice and glowy and hydrated this autumn," he continued.

The next step is to exfoliate to reduce the appearance of dry and flaky skin caused by the cold weather. "I use the Tatcha Rice Exfoliant and I absolutely love this one," Scott added.

"You can get any exfoliant you want, use it once or twice a week and this will keep your skin radiant. No dead skin cells. Plus it helps absorb our products better. That's what we want."

Perhaps the most obvious - and yet important step - in any skincare routine is a good moisturiser when tackling dry skin. But when the weather is getting colder, Scott recommends changing to a "more hydrating serum or moisturiser" at this time of year.

"The weather is changing. It's getting a lot cooler. Sooner or later, that heat is going to be coming on at our homes and it's just going to dry out our skin. We don't want that because it causes so many problems," he said before recommending the Iray serum and CeraVe Hydrating lotion.

Finally, he added a step that many people skip in the autumn and winter months – SPF. He explained: "I've been using the Trinny London one guys UV rays happened all year round. Sun may not be out, but the UV rays are still very active.

"We want to keep our skin protected. We don't want them hitting our face because and cause ageing. We don't want that. SPF is a must every day, any time of the year."

Instagram users have praised the tips in the comments. One user said: "Thank you for this," while another added: "Love these tips!" Someone else penned: "Fab tip, never thought of changing up the cleanser."
