The second film - also directed by Tim Burton - is set three decades after the events of the first and introduces us to Lydia's estranged teenage daughter Astrid, played by Wednesday star Jenna Ortega.

All three Deetz women are forced to return to the original ghost house in Winter River following the tragic death of Charles Deetz, but the trip soon turns into a longer stay than previously planned thanks to a surprise proposal from Lydia's creepy partner Rory (Justin Theroux).

Audiences can expect a return to the afterlife in the follow-up film where they'll meet new cast members portrayed by Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe and Danny DeVito.

Here's a round-up of what reviewers have been saying of Beetlejuice 2:

Digital Spy

"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice could never aspire to replicate the innovative and unique spectacle that was Beetlejuice back in 1988, but it sure captures its deliciously eccentric sense of fun."

Empire Magazine

"Michael Keaton, barely ageing a day in his panda-eyed demonic get-up, if anything seems to have more energy than he did 35 years ago, bouncing off the purgatorial walls with hilarious gusto, lifting everything around him."

Hollywood Reporter

"The zippy pacing, buoyant energy and steady stream of laugh-out-loud moments hint at the joy Burton appears to have found in revisiting this world, and for anyone who loved the first movie, it’s contagious."

Variety

"It doesn’t give you the full monster-kitsch jolt that the original film had. Yet there’s good fan service and bad, and as stilted and gimcracky as it can sometimes be, I had a pretty good time at Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."

Screen International

"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice may not be that fresh or substantial – it’s basically comfort food for long-term Burton fans -- but it’ll be hard for viewers to repress a pleased smile, or graveyard rictus."

BBC

"The nicest surprise is that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is that rare thing, a big-budget comedy which is actually funny."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is released in cinemas on September 6.
