Befriending Bolivia's native birds
Bolivians befriend birds
Location: La Paz
Elba Soto and her son
have attracted a trio of birds
to their 18th-floor window
(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) LOCAL RESIDENT, ELBA SOTO, SAYING:
They come and we give them food right to their beaks and they eat it. There are three of them and they're always together. Lately, it seems that since it's spring and mating season, a couple has formed and one comes alone, but there’s always three of them.”
The southern crested caracara
is a species of falcon
native to Central and South America
Elba says they enjoy eating minced meat
and have brought her a lot of joy
(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) LOCAL RESIDENT, ELBA SOTO, SAYING:
"We paid more attention and we saw them more. For me, it was like a visit. I said I had three lovely visitors because every time that they come they bring us happiness. I feel very happy to see them And, with the issue of the fires, with so many animals being lost and birds disappearing, I felt very useful to be saving these three birds."
