Work begins to expand Surrey hospital 'to meet growing patient demands'
Doctors at a Surrey Hospital could soon be able to carry out more “urgent work” after two new operating theatres and a dental surgery were granted planning permission. The two-storey extension will fill space between two wings at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill and help staff better cope with increasing demand.
The dental treatment area would occupy the ground floor with the operating theatres above, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council's planning committee heard on September 25. Officers told the meeting the new building was “required to facilitate other urgent works within the hospital to meet growing patient demands.”
Work at the Surrey And Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust run hospital has already begun, with diggers on site tearing down the existing temporary cabin in order to clear the site. The meeting heard: “Preparation work is already under way with the temporary block already removed.

“The new development will be connected by fully enclosed bridges to neighbouring operating building. The report read: “An existing temporary cabin would be removed from the site to facilitate the proposed new building.
“The ground floor is proposed as the dental treatment area with three dental clusters, the first floor would have two operating theatres and the second floor would be a plant room for ventilation equipment.
“The second floor plant room is proposed to house the ventilation for the two new theatres and also the ventilation for the four existing operating theatres in the adjacent building to the west of the site. This would help to free up the ground floor of this building for other purposes."
