Being extra is THE fashion trend at the 2020 Grammy Awards

The 2020 Grammy Awards have officially kicked off, and the red carpet is on fire. From Billy Porter’s blue eyeshadow and sequin ensemble to Lizzo matching her crystal-embossed gowns to her manicure, we’re seeing that being extra is the most prevalent fashion trend of the evening—and we love it. If not for anything else, a red carpet is the perfect place to elevate your style game and push the boundaries of fashion, and this year’s Grammys are evidence of that. Below, our favorite over-the-top looks from the 2020 Grammys red carpet.

Billy Porter has done it once again! The Pose star showed up on the red carpet with a glittering blue bodysuit, cropped jacket, motorized blue hat with a chandelier fringe, and silver accessories. But let’s talk about that hat for a moment: Porter’s stylist, Sammy Ratelle, said he was controlling a mechanical device embedded in the hat to make the fringe open and close. A mechanical hat!

The “Truth Hurts” singer looked good as hell in a custom Atelier Versace gown—but it’s the details that make the outfit. If you look closely enough, you’ll see that Lizzo’s nails are dripping in crystals, just like her gown is.

The “Old Town Road” singer was a neon-bright cowboy on the red carpet in custom Versace. He turned up the style-volume with a fuchsia mesh shirt and a hot pink leather harness—we stan.

Ariana Grande channeled Cinderella in her custom-made gray Giambattista Valli gown. The strapless gown is fitted, and it puffs out at the waist into voluminous waves of tulle. The “7 rings” singer paired the princess-worthy dress with silky gloves that go past her elbows, and topped the look off with her signature high ponytail.

This Victorian-esque black and pink ensemble didn’t stop at the gown. FKA Twigs’ custom Ed Marler design also had lace sleeves and tights with delicate designs. Remind us, who said that less was more?

6Billie Eilish

We can always count on Billie for a killer red carpet look, and this outfit was no exception. The “Bad Guy” singer wore a black and green Gucci suit and added to her swag with long green nails to match.

7Gwen Stefani

This look deserved a close-up because upon inspection, Gwen Stefani’s dress is embossed in hundreds of little shells. The dress, which is a custom Dolce & Gabanna creation, even includes shells that her boyfriend, Blake Shelton, has collected for her over the years. When asked about that while on the red carpet, Stefani exclaimed that the dress was made of “shell-dons.” Cute!

The jazz bassist and singer wore this colorful Diego Montoya jumpsuit with the words “life force” spelled out across the chest.

Model Shaun Ross stunned in a head-to-toe pearl embossed suit.
