Bell says vandalism could be a factor in a number of damaged telecoms equipment boxes in the Town of Essex.

The issue was raised at a council meeting on Monday, with Mayor Sherry Bondy saying the town is receiving a number of complaints from the public regarding damaged Bell pedestals and their unsightly appearance and risk to public safety.

Bondy told CBC News she was not sure how the boxes were being damaged, but suggested it might be due to "age" or "neglect."

At Monday's meeting staff were directed to send a letter to Bell requesting immediate attention to their "infrastructure to address these concerns of safety and aesthetics within the Town of Essex."

On Thursday a spokesperson for Bell said the telecoms giant is aware of damage to some pedestals in the Essex area.

"One of our technicians inspected several pedestals today and did some minor repairs, while a few of them will need to be replaced," Jacqueline Michelis wrote in an email to CBC News.

"The damage is not impacting service. Damage to pedestals can be caused by a number of things including vandalism, being hit by a vehicle or adverse weather over time."

Meanwhile, Bell is encouraging anyone who notices a damaged pedestal to call 1-866-480-5901.
