Bella Thorne has revealed that she was once molested after hitting back at a Twitter troll.

The former Disney star, 20, told her followers that she had been a victim of sexual abuse in the past, saying that the world “can be a sick place sometimes”.

Thorne made the admission after one of her followers commented on a picture of her, writing: “What did Disney do to this girl?! I think she was molested.”

“Yeah I was. So it wasn't Disney,” she wrote in response, prompting an outpouring of support from her fans.

In a tweet posted a few minutes later, the actress simply posted: “The world can be a sick place sometimes :/.”

Thorne’s boyfriend, Mod Sun, later sent her a message of support, which read: “Love u mama ur the strongest person I know.”

“My baby the bravest baddest most talented girl in the game. using her influence to spread awareness abt the hardest s*** in her life. legit incredible (sic),” wrote her friend Tana Mongeau.

Thorne rose to fame in Disney Channel show Shake It Up in 2010 and has gone on to star in films including You Get Me and Blended.

A number of famous women have spoken out to share their stories of sexual abuse and harassment in the wake of the allegations surrounding disgraced movie mogul, Harvey Weinstein.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Ashley Judd have all accused the producer of harassment, but he denies all allegations of non-consensual sex.
