Bells Toll at St George's Cathedral in Honor of Late Desmond Tutu

The bells of St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, South Africa, tolled for 10 minutes at noon on Tuesday, December 28, in honor of the late human-rights campaigner Desmond Tutu.

The former archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, known for his work as an anti-apartheid activist, died in a Cape Town nursing home at age 90 on Sunday. The city of Cape Town lit up their City Hall and Table Mountain in honor of Tutu, who was associated with the color purple.

Additionally, the bells of St George’s Cathedral will be tolling for 10 minutes at noon every day from Monday, December 27, until Friday, December 31, to honor the late archbishop.

Video filmed by journalist Graeme Raubenheimer shows several people ringing the bells of St George’s Cathedral. Raubenheimer captioned the video, “The bells at St George’s Cathedral ring out through Cape Town at midday, as the world mourns a remarkable human being, #DesmondTutu.”
