The director of Triple Frontier has revealed that the film's star Ben Affleck is the one who came up with *that* shock twist.

Affleck plays military veteran and struggling alcoholic Tom 'Redfly' Davis in the movie, which follows a group of former Special Forces operatives who reunite to plan a life-changing heist in South America.

During the film, the group venture into the Columbian jungle to steal from a major drug lord, and along the way, Redfly starts getting careless, even killing a number of innocent villagers who are trying to defend their field after the group's helicopter crashes with all the money on board.

And those actions have consequences, as Redfly is shockingly killed off just before the film's final third when he's shot in the head by the son of a villager who had been killed - shocking viewers in the process.

Speaking about the twist, director JC Chandor revealed that Ben Affleck was the one who wanted his character to be killed off, with Chandor sharing that the actor brought it up in their first meeting.

"When I first read the script it was a secondary character [who got killed], I can’t even remember which one of the other guys it was," Chandor told Collider.

"It was actually in meeting with Ben for the first time, he suggested it. He said, 'Would you ever be willing to do that?' I had actually moved it to a different character than the one that I originally read [in Mark Boal’s draft of the script].

"I won’t get into who, but it was to another character and it was very secondary. Ben said, 'Would you ever be willing to, if I got the studio to agree to it, to allow that to be me?'"

According to Chandor, Ben had "wanted to do something like this before" but the studio didn't allow it and the actor had always regretted it.

"He suggested it to me and I left his office that day and I was like, 'YES!'" Chandor added. "I realised it was so neat that instead of it being the guy that should have died, it was the guy that shouldn’t have, in a way.

"Even though he’s the leader, and he should have known better."

As for Affleck, he added that he thought the twist would be "interesting", and said that he wanted to catch people "off guard".

"I wanted to see somebody actually pay a price for what happened," he said. "It highlights the risk to people's lives. It focuses on the mortality question and theme, which I think is really interesting."

Triple Frontier is available to stream on Netflix now.
