Ben Spencer discusses his Bath Rugby future as Harlequins ace is linked
Ben Spencer confirmed he is keen to sign a new contract at Bath Rugby to extend his stay at the club having entered into his last season under his current deal.
Spencer, 32, joined Bath from Saracens in 2020 and has gone from strength to strength in recent years, being named as club captain in 2022 when Johann van Graan arrived in the West Country from Munster. In the last year, Spencer has also returned to the England set-up and is a leading contender to wear the number nine jersey for his country this Autumn with Northampton Saints’ Alex Mitchell currently injured with a neck issue.

Speaking to the BBC’s Rugby Union Weekly podcast about his future, Spencer said: “I am really happy here. The club is in such a great place now, it would be tough to leave when the club is on the up.”
Asked directly whether we would consider a big-money move to the French Top 14, Spencer said: “Potentially later on in my career, in terms of a family point of view to experience playing and living in France would be awesome. We will see where we are at as a family and see what we want to do, but for now I am really focused on the club and I would love to re-sign here and the club is on the up.”
Last week RugbyPass reported that Bath are considering a move to sign Harlequins’ Will Porter who has emerged as a starter for the West London club this season with veteran Danny Care playing off the bench.
Porter, 25, previously played for Wasps until the club went under, moving to Bristol Bears on a short-term deal and then signing for Quins.
Bath also have Springbok scrum-half Louis Schreuder on their books but like Spencer he is also out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
Further down the pecking order, Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan has high hopes for 22-year-old Tom Carr-Smith who started on the bench in the 20-15 victory over Leicester Tigers on Sunday.
