Come rain or shine, you can always rely on Benjamin Mendy to see the positive side of things.

The defender suffered a blow on Wednesday night with Manchester City confirmed that he had undergone surgery on a meniscus problem in his left knee after withdrawing from the France squad.

No timescale has been given for the recovery of the 24-year-old, who missed the majority of last season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Crystal Palace in September 2017.

He returned from injury in April this year and has started nine of City's 12 Premier League games this season.

Despite the setback, Mendy took to Twitter soon after the club's statement to allay City fans' fears of a lengthy layoff.

And recognising his status as one of the highest-scoring defenders in the Premier League's fantasy football game (FPL), Mendy and also managed to have a bit of fun in the process.

Replying to City's tweet about his injury, Mendy said: "Other knee was jealous but the operation went well and its all good now be back soon guys u just have to found another FPL captain for some games".

City's full statement read: "Manchester City can confirm that Benjamin Mendy has undergone surgery on his left knee tonight.

"The Frenchman, who played the full 90 minutes in the weekend's 3-1 win over rivals Manchester United, travelled to join up with his national team before withdrawing from the squad.

"The 24-year-old defender attended Dr. Cugat's clinic in Barcelona where scans revealed that surgery was required.

"That surgery was conducted on Wednesday evening and everyone at Manchester City wishes Benjamin a speedy recovery."

Mendy cost a reported £52million when he moved to the Etihad from Monaco in 2017.
