Voters in south-east London were forced to wade through water to get to their polling station on election day after a burst water water main caused flooding in the road around it.

Video footage posted on Twitter showed one voter in Bermondsey ankle deep in water as they made their way to vote.

Hannah Tookey, who waded through the water to cast her vote, tweeted: “It was too deep to wade through the middle, even in wellies.”

She added that there was flooding "all the way down the street".

The incident even prevented one voter from voting.

Graham Kings said he did not have time to go back home and put wellies on.

He said: “I could have gone home and put wellington boots on and waded across the flooded road to try to get in, but had to go to work and so will vote this evening.”

A spokesperson from Thames Water said: "One of our water pipes was damaged by a third party doing road works in the area.

"More than 1,000 properties are supplied by the pipe so rather than simply turn it off, we’re re-routing the water so everyone stays connected.

"We’ll then work to repair the pipe."
