US Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has congratulated Jeremy Corbyn for his showing at the General Election.

The veteran US socialist said he was “delighted” after Corbyn’s Labour exceeded all expectations in the vote, securing its highest number of seats in years.

“I am delighted to see Labour do so well”, he told the Washington Post newspaper.

All over the world people are rising up against austerity and massive levels of income and wealth inequality.

“People in the UK, the US and elsewhere want governments that represent all the people, not just the 1 per cent. I congratulate Jeremy Corbyn for running a very positive and effective campaign.”

It is not the first time Sanders, 75, has praised Corbyn.

During the election campaign he spoke in Cambridge and praised the Labour leader’s “courage”.

Sanders narrowly missed out running for the US presidency after himself running a surprisingly successful campaign, which threatened to stop Hillary Clinton winning the Democratic Party nomination.

Labour is on course to win 261 seats, a result described as “incredible” by Corbyn.

His share of the vote is higher than any Labour leader for 20 years.
