Bertie Carvel has challenged Rupert Murdoch to watch the West End transfer of Ink — and cheekily asked him to “give us a review”.

The acclaimed play about the birth of The Sun newspaper enjoyed a sell-out run at the Almeida Theatre, and has now transferred to the Duke Of York’s Theatre.

It stars Carvel as fledgling media mogul Murdoch.

Carvel said: “I’d love him [Murdoch] to see it. As someone who loves newspapers, I think he’d have a love for the play. I hope he would recognise some version of the truth — that’s our aspiration. Maybe he can give us a review?”

Carvel joked that the play’s transfer to the West End would also appeal to the mogul’s populist instincts, “because we’ve escaped the ‘toxic’ embrace of the subsidised sector and we’re up there selling stuff to punters and they either want to buy it or they don’t.”
