The best house clubs in London

Ever since the likes of Frankie Knuckles first pioneered house music in 80s Chicago, the genre has been synonymous with clubbing culture.

Just a few years after its initial inception, the acid house scene of the 90s became one of the most important UK sub-cultures of the decade, and it wasn't long before the influence of illegal raves was being felt in London's clubs.

It's made a huge resurgence in recent years too, with artists like Swedish House Mafia, Avicii and Calvin Harris bringing the genre to the forefront of popular culture.

In fact, chances are if you hit the town on a Saturday night these days, at least one of the places you end up will be playing some form of house.

It might be one of the most popular forms of club music, but some venues do it way better than others. In that vein, these are the best house clubs you can find in London.

Ministry of Sound

103 Gaunt Street SE1 6DP club.ministryofsound.com

Ministry of Sound has been one of the capital’s best-loved clubbing institutions for nearly 25 years and things don’t look like changing anytime soon. It’s renowned for its club nights and has been keeping London’s house fans satisfied since 1991. This is a must for house fans all over the capital.

Egg London

200 York Way N7 9AX egglondon.co.uk

Egg is one of the biggest and best clubbing venues in all of North London. It’s dedicated to playing great house music too, which makes it a regular fixture in ravers’ diaries all over the city. Add trippy lightshows and 8am closing times into the mix and you’ve got all the ingredients for a great night out.

Trapeze

89 Great Eastern St, London EC2A 3HX trapezebar.co.uk

Tucked away just a few minutes from Old Street station, you’ll find Trapeze; a circus-themed bar and nightclub that hosts DJ nights every weekend. Fridays are all about hip-hop, but the club is known for their great house events on Saturdays, which are some of the best in the area.

Cargo

83 Rivington St, Shoreditch, London EC2A 3AY cargo-london.com

Not only is Cargo one of East London’s best clubbing venues, but it specialises in playing great house music too. The club is located in a disused railway yard, and the clubbing space itself is set back into the old railway arches. It’s a cool, post-industrial space, where you can enjoy their Wanderlust nights on Saturdays, offering a great mix of tropical and commercial variations of the genre.

Phonox

418 Brixton Rd, Brixton, London SW9 7AY http://phonox.co.uk/

Phonox is still relatively new on the scene, but the Brixton club is fast gaining a reputation for putting on some of the best house nights in south London. Playing only serious house and dance, London’s dedicated dance tribes gather here on a regular basis. You can always find accomplished and acclaimed DJs popping up on Phonox’s events calendar too, making this the venue of choice for well-informed house fans.

XOYO

32-37 Cowper St, London EC2A 4AP xoyo.co.uk

XOYO quickly established itself as one of the best clubbing venues in London after opening its doors in 2010. Their DJ nights offer a pretty eclectic mix of genres during the week, but on Saturdays it’s all about house, as well as disco and techno to a lesser extent. It’s one of the big players in east London, and well worth checking out.

The Coronet

28 New Kent Rd, London SE1 6TJ coronettheatre.co.uk

This converted theatre in south-east London is known for being one of the buzziest club venues in London, and it throws some of the craziest parties in the city. So crazy in fact, that police were called to the premises after a huge rave got out of hand there earlier this year. Its club nights specialise in house too, so if you fancy a huge night in SE1, this could be the place for you.
