From vampy berry to rosy nude, a statement lip is a simple way to brighten up dark winter days. But let’s face it – some of us have no time (or patience) for all the fuss that frequent re-applying involves. Opting for a formula that’s designed to stay put all day is one of the best ways around this dilemma.
If you’re worried about the drying effects of long-wear lipsticks, you’ll be pleased to find that there are plenty of non-drying options on the market that will help save you from constant bathroom stops. We’ve tried and tested our way through some of the best, including YSL’s Tatouage Couture and Urban Decay’s Vice.
Beauty Bakerie Lip Whip
It doesn’t get more budge-proof than this liquified wonder from Beauty Bakerie. Seriously ladies – if you long for intense pigment that stays put until you remove it, this is the lippie you need in your life. Just one swipe provides an impressive laydown of colour that blends seamlessly with the lips and doesn't need touching up until the end of the day. The brand has its own remover pads to clean it off thoroughly, but an oil-based makeup remover should do the trick.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Backtalk
If you prefer traditional lipstick, then Urban Decay’s sumptuously comfortable Vice is a must-try. It’s available in an impressive variety of 29 shades – our favourite is Backtalk, a dusky mauve-pink. Providing a pearly finish and barely-there feel, it applies like a dream and doesn't need an extra layer until around 5 hours. Tip: dab an oil-based gloss to the middle of your bottom lip for a fuller effect.

Yves Saint Laurent Tatouage Couture Liquid Lipstick
Housed in a luxuriously weighty case, YSL’s intensely pigmented liquid formula is guaranteed to stay put on lips for up to eight hours. It dries immediately to a satin finish and comes in some of the boldest hues we’ve ever seen – 22 Corail Anti-Mainstream and 03 Rose Ink both look great on medium-warm skin tones. One coat is plenty but if you’re after a dramatic look, apply an extra layer using a lip brush. It does transfer a little, but we didn’t need a touch up until late in the afternoon – so it’s a safe bet for date night.

Barry M Matte Me Up Lip Kit
Barry M is giving Kylie Jenner a run for her money with these pocket-friendly and cruelty-free lip kits. In a variety of chic nudes, each girly box comes with a liquid lipstick and a matching lip liner (we tested the new Ride Or Die hue – which launches in February). The lipstick has a silky consistency that absorbs instantly, leaving lips coated in ultra-pigmented colour. While many budget lip liners tend to dry out your pout, this one has a soft texture that prevents a dehydrated look. We needed an extra coat of lipstick (and lip balm) by lunchtime, but the finished look managed to last after a quick kiss and two cups of tea.

Once dry, the lightweight formula didn’t smudge at all and lasted through lunch with minimal touch ups. Pair it with the beauty guru’s Lip Contour pencil for a perfectly plumped-up pout.

Smashbox Always On Matte
Much like Lip Whip, this budge-proof lipstick has an impressive staying power that will hold up through some serious smooching and even greasy food. Its rich formula – which contains botanical moisturisers – is light enough to forget you’re wearing it, while the precision tip applicator means it’s a cinch to apply without a lip liner. In a stunning range of vivid hues, there’s something to perk up every complexion.

Too Faced Melted Matte
This long-wearing formulation is a secret weapon for bold, matte lips with high-impact colour and increased volume. While its creamy texture is similar to that of a gloss, the lipstick dries to an ultra-matte finish that survives through eating, drinking and smooching for hours on end. It’s also a great way to achieve fuller lips without stinging or aggravation. To prevent dryness and flaking, ensure lips are exfoliated and moisturised before application.

This bargain beauty comes in a variety of luscious shades for creating everyday neutral lips or dramatic pouts – we spotted incredibly-close dupes of the lipsticks from Kylie Jenner’s famous duos. With a mousse-like texture, the satiny-matte formula stays on the lips for a good few hours before it needs reapplying. Apply two coats for maximum intensity.
