The Country Music Awards are the biggest night in country music, and on the red carpet front it's all about big hair, sequins and high glamour.

At the 52nd Annual CMA Awards, the looks worn by the women behind the biggest country songs ranged from off-the-shoulder ruffles to more seasonally appropriate crushed velvet.

One style standout was Thomas Rhett’s wife Lauren Akins, a breakout star in her own right with more than two million Instagram followers. The couple are fond of sharing their life and photos of their two sweet daughters on social media. “My wife is very attractive and I feel very grateful to be nominated and to be here", her husband posted at the ceremony.

Carrie Underwood, currently pregnant with her second child, also made a memorable appearance on the red carpet in a heavily-embroidered gown by Italian label Uel Camilo. Underwood has had a rough year after undergoing plastic surgery for a fall that resulted in multiple stitches on her face. She laughed off the drama on stage later by coming out in a bubble wrap dress alongside her co-host Brad Paisley. Underwood also took her moment on stage to reveal the sex of her baby - she's having a boy.

Jason Aldean’s wife Brittany Aldean, another Instagram favorite, walked the carpet in lemon yellow. Aldean is also currently pregnant with the couple’s second child. Meanwhile, Florida Georgia Line singer Tyler Hubbard brought his baby onto the red carpet, offering everyone a glimpse of what's to come next year for Underwood and Alden.

But the overall winner of the night was Kacey Musgraves, who wasn't just impeccably dressed but also won album of the year too. In a male-dominated country music field, it was a major win, especially since Musgrave's lyrics push the boundaries of country music, with songs that don't shy away from subjects like marriage equality. In a sea of glittery gowns, her Versace suit spoke volumes.
