Small is beautiful when it comes to this new addition to LG’s smart TV range. The 32-inch LG 32LM637BPLA is the perfect size for bedrooms, kitchens and dens, and it’s currently selling for £249 at John Lewis.

The screen may be bijou, but it offers a big viewing choice when connected to your home network. Freeview Play ensures there is plenty of Catch-Up TV on tap, along with a stack of free to view box sets.

The smart platform featured is LG’s much-praised (by me) webOS, so you can be sure all the key streaming services are included too, including Netflix, Now, YouTube and Prime Video.

But what really sets this LG telly apart from rival small screen cheapies is HDR (High Dynamic Range) picture technology. Normally HDR is associated with larger 4K flatscreens, but here LG is using its Active HDR picture wizardry, along with a Dynamic Colour Enhancer, to give extra pop to regular HD sources (presented here as 720p HD Ready). It also works with HDR sources like games consoles and streaming services.

LG’s Active HDR makes for better contrast, darkening down black levels, while providing a boost to bright highlights.

There’s also a relatively high-spec Quad core processor on board, which not only supports the extra image processing required, but keeps navigation nice and sprightly.

The set even makes a stab at improving audio, which can be notoriously bad on smaller TVs, using Virtual Surround Plus to create a surround sound effect.

If you want to get interactive, you can upgrade the TV with LG's Magic Remote (sold separately). Using that zapper’s built-in microphone and cursor control, you take advantage of LG’s Thinq AI technology. This allows the set to respond to a variety of spoken commands.

The 32LM637 will also work with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa devices, for simple voice control of channel and volume.

For such a little screen, there’s loads to admire.
