The 12 best shows on TV this weekend: The Wall, Bloodlands and more

Whether you're looking a brand new drama to get stuck into or fancy something far more relaxing, there are plenty of great shows on TV this weekend.

If you're dreaming of a holiday, start by tuning in to Kate Humble's inspiring new Channel 5 show, which will have you booking a trip (when it's safe, of course) in no time.

Over on Channel 4, one of the best dramas of the past 12 months is about to reach its emotional ending while the BBC are preparing to welcome back a much-loved game show.

Finally, finish your weekend with a brand new thriller from the creator of Line Of Duty.

Here are 12 of the best shows on TV in the next three days...

FRIDAY

Kate Humble’s Coastal Britain (8pm, Channel 5)

If you’re one of the many Brits hoping holidays will be back on the menu this summer, then this Channel 5 offering could provide some inspiration on where to head off to.

Kate Humble will be visiting numerous stunning beachside locations, starting off with the South West Coastal Path, which stretches for 630 miles around Cornwall and Devon.

It’s A Sin (9pm, Channel 4)

If you’ve managed to resist the temptation to binge the whole series on All4 – or just want to watch it again – then the emotional It’s A Sin finale is airing on Channel 4.

Keeley Hawes’ appearances in the show have been minimal up to this point, but this episode sees the actress move to the centre of the story as her character struggles to cope when her son Ritchie (played by Years And Years frontman Olly Alexander) comes to terms with his ailing health.

Later… With Jools Holland (9pm, BBC Two)

Jools is back in the (socially-distanced) studio and kicking off the new series in style with acclaimed singer-songwriter Arlo Parks.

At just 20 years old, Parks (whose real name is Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho) has already won critical acclaim for her recently-released debut album, Collapsed In Sunbeams, which debuted at number three in the Official UK Albums Chart.

Framing Britney Spears (10pm, Sky One)

Sky is offering fans another chance to see the New York Times documentary, who has catapulted Britney Spears’ story back into the spotlight.

The film explores Spears’ teenage rise to fame and questions the media treatment she faced as her personal struggles became tabloid fodder in the mid-noughties. While the Spears family declined to take part in filming, a number of her former close associates – including an assistant, backing dancer and one-time lawyer – offer their insights on her situation and ongoing conservatorship.

SATURDAY

The Wall vs Celebrities (6.40pm, BBC One)

Another regular series of this Danny Dyer-fronted game show is on the way but before that kicks off, there’s one more celebrity special.

This week, it’s the turn of football legends John Barnes and Chris Kamara, who will be taking on the wall with the hope of winning a seriously huge amount of cash for charity.

Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (7pm, ITV)

The 2020 series of Ant And Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway was thrown into chaos when the pandemic arrived in the UK mid-way through. But this time around, the duo are more than ready to bring some much-needed laughs to lockdown.

They’ve even managed to film a new Get Out Me Ear stunt with Harry and Jamie Redknapp while Gary Barlow will deliver the end of show performance.

Victoria Wood: A Bafta Tribute (8pm, BBC Two)

Over on BBC Two, this fantastic tribute to a comedy legend is getting another outing.

The show was initially created back in 2012, as Wood was preparing to receive the prestigious Bafta Award. Now, nearly five years on from her death, the BBC and Bafta are giving fans another chance to celebrate the star. The hour-long special includes tributes from the likes of Julie Walters and Richard E Grant, interspersed with some of Wood's finest on-screen moments.

SUNDAY

Sunday Brunch (9.30am, Channel 4)

Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer will be welcoming a bumper group of guests, including two recent reality TV champions, Celebrity Home Cook’s Ed Balls and The Masked Singer UK’s Joss Stone.

Nicky Campbell will also be making an appearance, alongside Ella Henderson and Chris Packham, while music will be provided by You Me At Six.

Dancing On Ice: The Greatest Show (6pm, ITV)

Dancing On Ice is taking a much-needed pause this week after being blighted by further injuries and positive Covid-19 tests. In its place, ITV is airing a look back at some of the best moments from the show’s 12 previous series.

The regular programme will (hopefully) return next week when Faye Brookes will skate with Matt Evers following the exit of her previous professional partner, Hamish Gaman. The pro became the latest star forced to quit the show after injuring his finger off the ice earlier this week.

The Great Pottery Throw Down (8pm, Channel 4)

The Great Pottery Throw Down is the perfect Sunday night offering and if you haven’t been tuning in weekly, we highly recommend catching up on All4.

This week, the remaining potters battle it out for a place in the quarter-finals. They’ll be faced with gardening-themed challenges and are tasked with creating animal-inspired water features and strawberry planters.

Bloodlands (9pm, BBC One)

James Nesbitt takes the lead in this brand new drama produced by Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio.

Mercurio has described the Belfast-set six-part series as “a contemporary thriller series with one foot in Northern Ireland’s emotive past”.

It kicks off with DCI Brannick (played by Nesbitt) investigating an abduction linked to a forgotten assassin, who he has a personal connection to.

Other cast members include Derry Girls’ Ian McElhinney, Lisa Dwan (Top Boy), and Michael Smiley (Spaced).

Finding Alice (9pm, ITV)

Meanwhile over on ITV, the Keeley Hawes-led Finding Alice continues.

Episode six sees our title character growing in confidence and trying to solve a list of growing problems before hopefully becoming a mother.
