Despite many thinking social media is the preserve of youngsters, Conservative MP and grandson of Winston Churchill Sir Nicholas Soames is widely regarded as the best user of hashtags, which he uses as vehicles for his great wit.

He and his opponent in the general election managed to show great sportsmanship, posing together for a photo, which Mr Soames kindly tweeted out with the comment: "Great to meet my Election opponent Baron von Thunderclap of Monster Raving Loony party at Staplefield Fete #gobaron".

Many have said it showed true British spirit, to be so polite to someone who has views so different from their own.

As candidates attack each other in order to claw their way into Parliament, it is cheering to see two opposing sides take a picture together, when the couldn't look more different.

One Twitter user wrote: "It looks like a scene from a weird rom-com - Sleeveless in Seattle! Or when Bary met Soamesy?"

Another enthused: "What a lovely idea. Hope you had a jolly good time!"

And another joked: "Maybe need to tag photo to identify who's who! Separated at birth?"

Mr Soames said of his opponent: "He's a thoroughly sound chap".

Despite some thinking the 69-year-old would retire from politics, he is standing again in the Mid Sussex seat and is feeling as energetic as ever.

He found a love for Twitter in recent years and often tweets his views, usually not ceasing to be polite unless he is angered, at which point he will make use of creative insults and ever-longer hashtags.

Sir Nicholas recently said to Donald Trump: "#suchboringinfantilewhingingandwhiningjustgrowupignoreitanddothejoborgo"
