The Middle East is famed for its luxurious offerings for tourists but new research has revealed that the best-value airport lounge in the world is found in glamorous emirate state Abu Dhabi.

Topping a list of the top 20 most affordable airport lounges compiled by travel website Netflights, the Al Ghazal Lounge by Plaza Premium Lounge in Terminal 2 of Abu Dhabi International Airport costs visitors just £21.45.

When compared to the £58.77 the average traveller spends on food, hot drinks and alcohol at airports before they fly, it proves a real bargain. Other research found that 87 per cent of travellers have never booked into an airport lounge and when looking at the reasons, almost half (47 per cent) said they believe lounges are too expensive.

Netflights collated data from 149 airport lounges around the world after revealing that 66 per cent of UK travellers find airports stressful. In addition to this, almost half of UK adults surveyed (46 per cent) admitted to purchasing items they didn’t need before jetting off.

The study weighed up the amenities in each lounge against the cost and found that the average price of enjoying an airport lounge offering free WiFi, drinks and food is £37.32.

After Abu Dhabi Airport’s lounge came Strata Lounge International Terminal at Auckland Airport (£28.15) and Lounge @ BTerminal 3 at Dubai International Airport (£28.86). The best-value lounge in the UK was named as Manchester Airport at £25, while at London Heathrow travellers pay £40 and at London Gatwick it costs £50.
