Best vegan Easter eggs: The best dairy-free chocolate for Easter 2019

Easter is almost here and that means two things – a well-deserved long-weekend and copious amounts of chocolate.

From Marmite-flavoured chocolate to an egg made entirely of cheese, there’s plenty of weird and wonderful treats to choose from this Easter.

As veganism continues to rise in popularity, there’s also an impressive selection of dairy-free Easter eggs to ensure those on a plant-based diet don’t miss out on all the sugar-fuelled fun.

From supermarket to super fancy, we’ve undertaken the extremely toiling task of testing a selection of vegan Easter eggs.

Here are our favourites:

ASDA Extra Special Free From Dairy Free Belgian Dark Chocolate Easter Egg with Vanilla Flavoured Truffles

Creamy, smooth and deliciously moreish – this was the favourite of the lot. Unlike other dark chocolates, it’s not too rich and the velvety texture worked really well with the crunchy cocoa nibs. The truffles had a luxurious vanilla cream filling and if there had been more, we’d have scoffed the lot. We couldn’t believe this egg was from ASDA.

An absolutely divine combination of flavours, with a lasting hint of caramel and a satisfying salty aftertaste. At £4.99, this is one for people who want to try something different to plain old chocolate, but don’t want to splash out on the fancy stuff. Really great quality ingredients and a lovely taste without being too rich or heavy. A go-to Easter egg to gift for all your vegan friends.

Moo Free Cheeky Orange Egg

Whilst this may not be a vegan’s answer to Terry’s chocolate orange, this Easter offering from Moo Free is reminiscent of the classic tangy taste without being too overpowering. A fun and fuss-free flavour, this egg is a good choice for kids and anyone who loves chocolate orange.

Sainsbury’s Deliciously Free From Strawberry & White Chocolate Egg

This dairy-free egg from Sainsbury’s was certainly designed for those with a sweet tooth.

The combination of white chocolate and freeze-dried strawberries have a nostalgic flavour similar to the pink and white mice you used to get in the pick 'n' mix as a kid. A small and sweet egg, this is an ideal Easter egg for kids who love sweets (and the colour pink).

So Free White Chocolate Alternative Easter Egg

As dairy white chocolate is designed to be extra milky, it can be difficult to replicate the same flavours and textures in a vegan alternative.

However, this left us pleasantly surprised. The texture was creamy and smooth and easy to keep picking at. The flavour wasn’t as sweet as normal white chocolate, but perhaps this is preferable for those who don’t like their chocolate too sugary.

Extra-Thick Easter Egg – Rare and Vintage

You truly haven’t experienced luxury until you’ve laid eyes on this egg. A seriously thick egg made of 75 per cent Colombia chocolate, this indulgent creation from Hotel Chocolat is a real treat for the taste buds.

It’s delicious but also very rich, meaning you’re unlikely to be able to get through it in one sitting. It’s expensive, but the price is worth it considering it would probably take you a good few weeks to polish off.

If you like your dark chocolate on the smoother side, this is the egg for you. Made from 60 per cent cocoa, this Easter treat from Divine Chocolate delivered lots of flavour without being too heavy and the Himalayan salt really accentuated the cocoa taste. Plus, it's Fairtrade and the packaging is plastic free!

Booja Booja Fine de Champagne Chocolate Truffles Easter Egg

If you can’t think of a more perfect combination than booze and (dairy-free) chocolate, then this is the pick for you.

These luxurious truffles are filled with a soft, melt-in-your mouth centre with enough champagne to knock your socks off. They come in a beautiful hand-painted trinket box which can be reused as a jewellery box or place to store smaller, intricate items. Initially, we were a bit disappointed when there were only three truffles included in the box, but quickly found out that because the truffles are so rich, you wouldn’t want any more than a handful.
