The best of this year's Christmas TV adverts, ranked

From Digital Spy

It's that time of year again. Though it feels like people have only just taken their pumpkins in, naturally, the Christmas adverts are here.

The annual flurry of festive TV adverts has officially kicked off with brands like Asda and Argos leading the way (from the very beginning of November, believe it or not). Companies with reputations for delivering on those all-important adverts, *cough cough* John Lewis soon offered theirs up a short while later.

So, here is our very professional ranking – in ascending order – of the best Christmas adverts on telly this year:

Argos

The idea behind this father/daughter drumming duo is adorable (and 9-year-old drummer Nandi Bushell ROCKS). Unfortunately, the ad drags on far longer than necessary, and not even a crowdsurfing teddy bear can rescue it from inducing sleep like a particularly brutal food coma on Christmas Day.

Lidl

Like Lidl itself, this advert sticks to a tight budget, and while it's sweet that it aims for a more realistic portrayal of Christmas, what we want from these adverts is escapism, not our own lives reflected back at us on screen.

Boots

We've all been there. It's Christmas time and you have no idea what to buy for the special someone in your life, so it was clever to tap into this theme. Still, what Boots have forgotten all about here is festive cheer, and we're not convinced that there really is something for everyone in the shop anyway. Unless you want antihistamines and some fungal nail treatment for Christmas.

Asda

It's rather fitting that the little girl in this advert is on a mission to capture some Christmas magic, because that's exactly what Asda have managed to do here. Some flimsy effects aside, this is exactly the kind of heartwarming story we want to see on our screens during the festive period.

Amazon

The cheery Amazon boxes have returned for the third year in a row, and this time, they're singing Everybody Needs Somebody by Solomon Burke. It's not the most exciting ad in the world, but it's still heartwarming to see people from all walks of life celebrate here together. And I'm really hoping that little pink piano will end up in my stocking this year.

Aldi

Kevin the Carrot returns in one of the silliest but also most fun Christmas ads of 2019. Thanks to Tiny Tom (the tomato), Kevin is saved from the Leafy Blinders gang and goes on to perform an extremely catchy version of Robbie Williams' Let Me Entertain You. It's already in our heads after one listen and honestly, we will never know peas again.

Iceland

Just when you thought your kids had let it go, Frozen is back again with a new film and a starring role in the Iceland Christmas ad too. Genius marketing aside, this is also a fun little promo that will undoubtedly mesmerise children of all ages this festive season.

Marks and Spencer

Let's be real for a second. The best thing about Christmas is obviously knitwear, and that's something Marks and Spencer have tapped into brilliantly for their latest ad. Directed by Jake Nava, the director behind Beyoncé’s 'Single Ladies' video, this promo will have you jumping around with your jumpers in no time at all.

Ikea

Imagine Queer Eye mixed with Toy Story and it's all set to a UK grime soundtrack. That's the vibe Ikea are going for in their new Christmas ad, and while it's not the most cheery offering we've seen this year, it's easily the most original thanks in large part to MC D Double E.

TK Maxx

Nothing says "Christmas" quite like the voice of Love Actually’s Bill Nighy, even when paired with a daredevil skier. Between the cute St Bernard and an impressive moustache, this TK Maxx ad will leave you beaming with a smile wider than the skis he uses to deliver his gifts.

Sainsbury's

To celebrate their 150th birthday, Sainsbury’s have marked the occasion with a Dickensian Christmas ad, complete with Santa's origin story. It's a smart twist on the usual Father Christmas ads that flood our screens each year and yes, that may very well be a flood coming out of our eyes as well.

Waitrose & John Lewis

Move aside, Baby Yoda. Excitable Edgar is your new obsession this Christmas. For their first collaboration, Waitrose and John Lewis have crafted a brand new fairytale starring the adorable dragon, and he'll make your heart melt just like the snow outside.

Walkers

We never thought we could be convinced to eat Brussels sprout flavour crisps, but here we are, and it's all thanks to Mariah Carey. While Walkers might have missed a trick with the slogan — "All I Want For Crispmas" basically writes itself — watching everyone's favourite diva parody herself here is hilarious from start to finish. Totally worth the £9million it apparently cost to hire her.
