Better Call Saul: Cobbler

The long and devastating path from being Jimmy McGill to the Saul Goodman we know from Breaking Bad, is a moral journey that will eventually be compromised.

At the current lie of the land, there’s really just one question that is bothering me: how did James came to be Saul? Why did he decide to throw everything he had away and undertake the criminal life?

“Cobbler” started off with James happily working on the Sandpiper’s case. He uses his talent to contribute to the case in support of the elders and everything seems to go just fine.

He works in a beautiful new wood paneled office and has a new car, provided by the law firm. Saul is also able to buy a house to share with Kim (hopefully) and a horse…

As I said, everything seems to go just fine.

Something changes when James’ brother, Chuck decides to show up unannounced in one of the meeting between the two law firms that are working on the Sandpiper’s case.

His return should be one of triumph and reconciliation. However his sole interest seems to be putting Jimmy under pressure. Siblings.

Their relationship has been ultimately compromised after the developments of the past season and Jimmy’s ready to take his revenge against the brother who decided not to support him.

On the other side of the episode, there’s Mike who’s dealing with the case of the stolen football cards. Pryce is intended to go to the police, not knowing that he is suspected of drug dealing since the officers discovered the hidden place under the sofa in his house.

For the good sake of everyone, Mike gets Jimmy involved in the defense during the police’s interrogation. Jimmy, creative as always, comes up with a classic ridiculous story, full of weird sexual fetishes and creepy benefactors.

But in getting Pryce to make a video, he intentionally and explicitly contravenes the law. His relationship with Kim is also threatened when she finds out about the fabrication of illegal profits.

As is typical of TV, it’s not a big deal eventually since things are resolved but this episode gives a glimpse into the side of Jimmy that cannot help but break the law.

It can only be predicted that Jimmy is going to mess things up majorly in the future. Better call Saul.
