Bexleyheath crash: Woman and young child rushed to hospital after car being towed breaks free and hits them

A woman and two-year-old girl have been rushed to hospital after being hit by a car which broke free while being towed in south-east London.

Police are searching for the driver of the tractor unit after they didn't stop when the car broke free on Danson Road, in Bexley, at around 10.15am.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 50s, was walking along the pavement with the child when they were both hit by the vehicle.

A spokesman for the Met Police said the collision is “believed to have been caused by a car that was being towed breaking free from the tractor unit”.

They were both taken to a hospital for treatment. Police were awaiting an update on their conditions.

The Met confirmed the driver of the tractor unit did not stop at the scene and that enquiries into the crash were on-going. No arrests have been made.

The Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene as well as two ambulance crews.

Police officers closed off Danson Road, which runs alongside Danson Park, with buses placed on diversion.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 10:16am today (22 October) to Danson Road, Bexleyheath to reports of a road traffic collision.

“We sent an incident response officer, two ambulance crews, an advanced paramedic and two single responders in cars. We also dispatched London's Air Ambulance.

"We treated a woman and a baby at the scene. We took them both as a priority to a major trauma centre by road."
