Britain's Got Talent returned this weekend with the final round of auditions before the semi-finals on bank holiday Monday. The second act of the evening on Saturday, May 25, was Robert Statham from Derby.

The 59-year-old librarian explained that he loved books, telling Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly backstage: "It's all about reading tonight and books, books is knowledge."

"Tell me something interesting about you," Simon Cowell pressed when Robert walked out on stage. "Well, I love reading," Robert said, before adding: "I'm here tonight to hopefully win this, hopefully you take me to the Royal Variety."

Not sure what the act was going to be, Simon, Amanda Holden, Bruno Tonioli, and Alesha Dixon were surprised when Robert riled the crowd up with a catchy tune. "It's a rap," Ant said as the music started.

Lyrics in Robert's rap included: "I'm checking out my books, I'm checking out my books, if you bring them back late you're going to get funny looks. Everyone's a bookworm, read a book a day, a novel, or a biography, but not 50 Shades of Grey."

However, it was his catchy chorus that had the audience, Amanda, Alesha, and Bruno singing along. The chorus went: "Everybody in the house... sssssh. Everybody in the house, keep it down."

The rap earned Robert a red buzzer from Simon who was less than impressed, but the other judges enjoyed the performance, with Amanda even giving Robert a standing ovation following his "book drop" at the end of his routine.

"We weren't expecting that Robert, that's what I would call an acquired taste," Simon said, before adding: "Look, very nice to meet you but I'm going to say no."

Bruno then told Robert: "I think you were very entertaining, you put across a message in a very good way. Ssssh they tell me that all the time, so I'm with you."

As Alesha added: "I've never seen a book drop in my life. Do that again, drop the book." Amanda and Bruno then both gave Robert the thumbs up, leaving Alesha undecided.

"I quite enjoyed it but I don't know if I want to hear it again," she said. As she thought about what to do, Dec appeared from backstage and put his hands on his knees as he pleaded with Alesha to say yes.

"Look at Dec's little face," Amanda said, as Alesha told him: "Don't do that Dec because when you do that you make me do things like this... okay yes."

With three yeses Robert got the green light for the next stage of the competition, as Simon told him: "Amazingly you're through to the next round." Reacting at home, one viewer wrote on the social media platform X: "Librarian has the lyricsss," while another added: "I literally thought he was going to come out and read."

A third admitted: "Don’t even know what to expect on this show anymore." You can keep up to date with the latest TV and showbiz news by signing up to the newsletter here.
