Bianca Andreescu’s fresh injury update as medical results are revealed
Bianca Andreescu suffered a devastating ankle injury in the Miami Open earlier this week and now she has learned what damage has been done.
The Canadian star screamed in agony as she slumped to the floor during her match against Ekaterina Alexandrova, with a wheelchair required to take her from the court.
“I’ve never felt this kind of pain before,” screamed Andreescu as she lay on the court, in what appeared to be a serious injury problem.
The setback came as the 2019 US Open champion was enjoying a revival in fortunes after a run to the fourth round in Miami included wins against former Grand Slam champions Emma Raducanu and Sofia Kenin, as well as world No 7 Maria Sakkari.
Andreescu posted an update on her condition on Tuesday night, as she thanked fans for their support and stated she was awaiting the results of medical scans.
Now those results have come back, with ligament damage ensuring Andreescu will be forced to spend some time away from the court.
Yet her fans will be encouraged by her suggestion that the situation could have been worse, as she posted this message on Twitter.
“Results show that I’ve torn 2 ligaments in my left ankle,” said Andreescu.
“It’s tough to say exactly how long it will take, but let’s just say it could’ve been much worse!!
“I’m going to take it day by day, and I am optimistic that with the right work, rehab, and preparation, I’ll be back on court soon. Rehab process has already started and will continue to give updates. Love you all.”

The upbeat post will be seen as positive news, as Andreescu’s cries of pain as she was laying on the court in Miami sent a shiver down the spines of tennis fans around the world.
There has been an outpouring of support for the Canadian from her fellow players in recent days and now there is hope that she may not be out for as long as first feared.
“I’m just really sorry that it happened to Andreescu,” opponent Alexandrova said after the match.
“Seeing her on the court in so much pain, it’s just painful to watch. You cannot help, you just can do nothing, which is terrible.
“And I think she’s going to be fine soon, and I’m wishing for her speedy recovery.
“The first set was super tough and great, and it probably could be a pretty good match for both of us, but unfortunately this happened.”
Now the first positive news has emerged from this worrying story, with some relatively upbeat words from Andreescu.
What appeared to be a season-ending injury for Andreescu may now be less severe, with her suggestion that she is already contemplating a recovery plan and thinking about a return to action suggesting this story may have a happy ending.
