Ambitious plans have been unveiled for a pub that’s been an Abersoch mainstay for more than 150 years. St Tudwals Inn, thought to be the oldest pub in the Gwynedd village, is to undergo a three-month refurbishment starting January.

As the pub lies on Sryd Fawr, Abersoch’s main through route, it’s long been the place for people watching when the resort throngs in summer. Realising the place was in need of a revamp, owners Robinsons Brewery has closed the pub and is seeking a new tenant.

The company said its refurbishment will be “huge”, with renovations inside and out. The work is is due to be completed before Easter 2025. “This complete rejuvenation of the site will be just what the pub needs and will re-embed it as part of the circuit of Abersoch,” said Robinsons. “The designs planned for the pub are complement the historical features it has to offer, whilst creating a completely breath-of-fresh- air environment. The curb appeal is the glow-up the St Tudwals has been calling out for.”

Mood board plans suggest a rural-nautical interior for the two-star inn, while exterior designs give the place a pink and grey look. A popular covered terrace at the rear is being retained but Robinsons has yet to indicate its plans for St Tudwalls’ guest rooms.

The brewery is seeking an “experienced operator” to take over the pub, ideally with their own team. A five-year tenancy is on offer and Robinsons believes the inn can generate an annual turnover of £1.3m.

The company said it wants to find someone capable of turning St Tudwals into Abersoch’s “must-visit destination” for residents and tourists. Join the North Wales Live WhatsApp community group where you can get the latest stories delivered straight to your phone

As the resort has high footfalls in summer and dwindling numbers over winter, Robinsons is looking for a tenant with a “real eye for marketing” to take advantage of the village’s “competitive, affluent market”. The brewery said: “Abersoch is a renowned tourist hotspot, known for its affluence and bustling social scene.

“The area attracts high-intent customers, including professionals, business-class families, socialites, and retirees - all seeking premium experiences and have the money to spend. With its picturesque coastline, gorgeous summer weather and seasonal events, Abersoch guarantees high footfall from March to October, offering a lucrative opportunity to an operator who knows how to cater to a more select crowd.”

More refurbishment details will be released at a Robinsons’ recruitment event at The Mulberry, Conwy Marina, on Tuesday, December 10, from 10.30am-2pm. More details of the St Tudwals vacancy can be found here.

Other Robinsons venues with vacancies include The Trecastell hotel in Porth Llechog (Bull Bay), Anglesey, though this is currently under offer.
