It's official – E4, the UK home of The Big Bang Theory, has acquired the rights to air its spin-off Young Sheldon too.

In news that isn't exactly surprising, Channel 4 has confirmed that Young Sheldon will be coming to E4 next year, meaning there will be plenty of chances to get your Sheldon Cooper fix in one way or another on the channel come 2018.

The series, which serves as a prequel to the hit sitcom, follows a 9-year-old Sheldon (Iain Armitage) as he grows up in East Texas and struggles to be understood by his family, classmates and neighbours.

The sassy and precocious Sheldon quickly manages to annoy his teenage brother, the entire student body and even his teachers with his surprisingly stinging putdowns and supreme intellect.

Young Sheldon features Big Little Lies actor Armitage in the title role, while Jim Parsons, who plays the adult Sheldon in Big Bang, will narrate the series. Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Annie Potts, Montana Jordan and Raegan Revord also star.

Speaking last month about what landed Armitage the role, Parsons revealed that the young actor impressed with a mighty two-page monologue, as well as the fact that he is "such a man-child".

"They wrote the most trial-by-fire, two-page monologue and all these kids were coming in with it and they were all really good," Parsons said on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

"But Iain, when his tape came in, it was mind-blowing and I thought, 'He looks really young but he must be 13 to be able to do this' – but he was 8.

"He is such a man-child. He thinks like a man. He's fantastic. I didn't think I was very good with kids but I'm fine with him. He's such a sweet kid, too."

The Big Bang Theory premiered its 11th season in the US last night. Season 10 of the comedy was E4's biggest show of the year so far, attracting an average of 2.4 million viewers per episode and a share of the viewing audience that was more than double the channel's slot average.

Young Sheldon is created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, with Lorre, Molaro, Parsons and Todd Spiewak serving as executive producers.

The first episode of Young Sheldon premiered as a preview right after The Big Bang Theory on CBS in the US last night, before it officially starts on Thursday, November 2.
