Big change on the way for old toilet block in town centre
There will soon be a new occupant in an old toilet block in Cheltenham. The former public convenience in the town centre has been let with a 150 year lease and will not be vacant for much longer.
It is not known yet what the new use will be for the building, at the corner of High Street and Ambrose Street. When the borough council started to look for someone to take it over in 2022, they initially said it would not be let to anyone wanting to set up a takeaway business.
But in February 2024, the toilets were made available for offers over £65k +VAT for a new long term 150 year lease - with no restrictions on use. The council has said the building is an eyesore, but could become a landmark building because of its prominent location.

On Facebook, the borough council said: "The building on the corner of Cheltenham High Street and Ambrose Street, which was previously a public convenience, is getting a fresh start. It has been let with a 150 year lease and we are working with the new leaseholders on their plans to redevelop it for commercial use."
People were quick to make their views known on the forthcoming change, with some ironically suggesting it could be returned to use as toilets for those in need. Others expected another coffee shop, while it sparked some nostalgic memories for others.
One person said: "100% going to be another coffee shop like the Cox's Meadow loos became." Another said that whatever it becomes, they "hope it's got toilets."
Other people said it could end up being a vape shop, a nail bar or a barbers. One said: "Whatever happened to public toilets? What are we supposed to do if we find ourselves caught short?"
