Here's the news that Big Little Lies fans have been waiting for: HBO has started developing a second season.

The news was confirmed by HBO's programming president Casey Bloys following his panel at the TCA press tour on Wednesday (July 26) evening.

According to TVLine, Bloys told reporters that he recently asked Liane Moriarty - author of the original Big Little Lies novel - to "take a crack" at a potential season two storyline.

"I'll be very curious to see what she comes up with," the executive said.

Bloys also responded to first season director Jean-Marc Vallée's apprehension about returning to what was originally conceived as a close-ended, single-season narrative.

"I know [Jean-Marc] said that… but Nicole and Reese can be very persuasive," he joked. "First we have to see the material and see if it's worth everyone's time. And if it is, [we'll have a] conversation about directors."

Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern have all expressed interest in returning to the world of Big Little Lies, a soapy murder mystery set within the ritzy coastal California community of Monterey.

"So much of it is trying to stay true to the characters and their voices. If we can do it, then it will be done," Kidman recently said.

"I believe their stories warrant it and I don't want to abandon them. We don't want to sell them short, either. But I'm hoping we can find it if we take the leap."

Earlier in July, Big Little Lies picked up an impressive 18 Primetime Emmy Award nominations - including acting nods for Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern.
