The Alienist's Douglas Smith has joined season 2 of HBO's Big Little Lies in a major role.

According to Deadline, Smith will play new character Corey Brockfield, an off-beat surfer, aspiring marine biologist and Jane's (Shailene Woodley) co-worker.

Smith joins newbie Meryl Streep, who will be playing Celeste Wright's (Kidman) mother-in-law Mary Louise Wright.

As well as Reese Witherspoon (Madeline Martha Mackenzie), returning cast include Laura Dern (Renata), Zoë Kravitz (Bonnie), Adam Scott (Ed), James Tupper (Nathan), Jeffrey Nordling (Gordon) and Iain Armitage (Ziggy).

Another more surprising potential returnee is Alexander Skarsgård, as domestic abuser Perry Wright.

According to reports, Skarsgård is expected to return to the show for the next batch of episodes. He previously said that his character might not be dead, telling People: "I don't even know if I'm really dead or not. I feel okay right now but we'll see."

The critically acclaimed show, based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, was billed initially as a limited series, but following its Emmy and Golden Globe awards success, it was commissioned for a second season.

HBO says the new run will "explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting".

"Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode," it went on. "The potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom."

Big Little Lies airs on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK, though it won't be returning until 2019.
