Kat fans were left terrified when EastEnders’ spin-off show, Redwater, appeared to hint that she had died following a tragic boating accident in the series finale, with Alfie also being feared dead after he underwent surgery for a brain tumour.

In the closing scenes of the series, Kat was shredded by the propeller of a boat that she had fallen from as doctors fought to save Alfie’s life in hospital.

Speaking about her comeback, Jessie said: “I am thrilled to be returning to EastEnders next year and knowing what John Yorke has in store for the Slaters is incredibly exciting.

“I love Kat and Walford dearly and I cannot wait to get started – watch out Walford, Kat’s coming home.”

Gillian’s onscreen counterpart Jean officially left the soap in 2013 but has made several cameo appearances since then as long-suffering Stacey Fowler’s mother.

Laila has starred in the soap since 2000 and made her final appearance as Big Mo last January.

Speaking about her return, the actress said: “I’m really excited to be coming back.

“It’s the one question I’m constantly asked. I can’t wait to see everyone and get stuck back into life in Walford.”

The soap’s current executive producer, John Yorke, was the one to introduce the Slater clan 17 years ago, speaking about his decision to bring three of the women back he said: “The Slaters are one of the all-time great families in EastEnders and Albert Square has never felt quite the same since they scattered to different ends of the country, and in some cases beyond.

“It has been a real joy to find a way to bring them back together and we’re incredibly excited about where we are taking them next.

“It won’t just be familiar Slaters either as there are a couple of twists and characters to add fresh spice to an iconic creation.”

Only time will tell if one of those twists will be a shock confirmation of Alfie Moon’s passing…
