Bill Paxton's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the prominent Los Angeles hospital where the actor died.

The Golden Globe Award-nominated actor tragically passed away at just 61 years old in February 2017 after suffering a stroke brought on by complications from heart surgery.

His family is now accusing Cedars-Sinai and the attending surgeon of not disclosing the complicated nature of the "high risk and unconventional surgical approach" they used in trying to save his life, according to CNN.

Their lawsuit also accuses the hospital staff of having "misrepresented and/or concealed information relating to the risks of surgery", arguing that Paxton's death should have been preventable.

Digital Spy reached out to Cedars-Sinai Hospital for a response to these allegations, with a spokesperson telling us: "State and federal privacy laws prevent us from commenting about patient care without written authorization.

"But we can share the following: Nothing is more important to Cedars-Sinai than the health and safety of our patients.

"These remain our top priorities. One of the reasons for our high quality is that we thoroughly review concerns about any patient's medical care. This process ensures that we can continue to provide the highest quality care. "

In their own press statement, a spokesperson for Bill Paxton's family said: "Bill Paxton and his family trusted the physicians and staff at this medical facility but instead Cedars-Sinai betrayed their trust.

"The surgeon's actions resulted in this tragic and preventable death."

Mere days after Paxton's tragic death last spring, Jennifer Aniston paid an emotional tribute to the late Aliens and Titanic star on stage at the Academy Awards in Hollywood.

"As we celebrate together, we also take a moment to mourn the many legends we lost this past year," Jennifer told the star-studded audience through tears.

"Each and every one was a cherished member of our Hollywood family. As was beloved actor and friend who left us yesterday, Bill Paxton. All were loved and all will be missed."

Paxton was survived by his wife of 30 years, Louise Newbury, and their two children.
