Look, it's no secret that Billie Eilish can pull of literally everything, from badass oversized sleeping bag onesies, to blue hair, and beyond.

You might recall that more recently she's opted for a mullet-style look (featuring iconic lime green roots) - a look she's stuck with for over a year now, through various iterations.

Billie did tease us with a momentary root cover-up back in December (and we lost our actual minds). She also tricked us all with a mink-colour wig in her music video for Xanny (again, minds were lost) - but that look didn't last long either.

This week, in one of her first public appearances since lockdown began (her music video for my future was an adorable - albeit accurate - animation), Billie performed live at the 2020 Democratic National Convention and her hair was sending me serious post-mullet-era vibes, with longer green roots than ever before, and short layers grown out into a bouncy, borderline 90s look.

Billie also made a super powerful speech at the DNC, urging USA citizens to use their votes, saying:

"We need leaders who will solve problems like climate change and COVID, not deny them. Leaders who will fight against systemic racism and inequality. And that starts by voting for someone who understands how much is at stake. Someone who’s building a team that shares our values. It starts with voting against Donald Trump and for Joe Biden."

To understand why Billie's new look is of such importance, you need the mullet's backstory, so I'll sum it up:

In Nov 2019 a TMZ reporter asked Billie back in November if the mullet was here to stay, and she replied in the negative, explaining that it was the result of a miiiinor hair accident:

"Mullet? What do you mean, 'mullet'? That's so mean. No, listen, you know what happened? Someone dyed my hair and they burnt it, half of it off, and now it looks like a mullet but that shit is not on purpose, though."

When the reporter replies "keep the mullet, Billie!", she replies "No, I'm growing that shit out."

So - here's what I think's going down here. Billie's hair colourist possibly originally encountered problems in lightening her hair from jet black to blonde before turning it green, and this might have been why the hair break-age accident took place.

But, as Billie's natural, lighter hair colour grows through, the virgin hair will be taking the lightening process more easily, meaning Billie can bit-by-bit turn the top of her hair green, while the black (probably damaged) areas become shorter and shorter with every trim.

You can also see that the shorter layers that originally formed the 'mullet' look around her eyes and at the crown of her head are also growing out nicely.

B, we beg you - next time you go for a bleachy overhaul, just use some Olaplex.

The moral of the story?

Nothing can hold our Billie back from achieving her dreams, and no amount of hair breakage can could get in the way of her being the literal coolest gal on the planet.
