Billie Piper's new series 'I Hate Suzie' is about a celebrity photo hack

From Cosmopolitan

Sky's long-awaited original series I Hate Suzie is coming to screens very soon, and it sees Billie Piper reunited with Secret Diary of a Call Girl writer Lucy Prebble.

The series follows actor Suzie Pickles whose life unravels when her phone is hacked and pictures of her in a "compromising position" are leaked. The dark comedy stars Billie Piper in the lead role, and is described by Sky as "excruciatingly honest".

Here's everything we know about the series so far...

What is I Hate Suzie about?

The eight-part series follows Suzie Pickles, a successful actor whose life is torn apart when her phone is hacked and pictures of her in a "compromising position" are leaked. Suzie goes through all the stages of grief - Shock, Denial, Fear, Shame, Bargaining, Guilt, Anger and Acceptance as she tries to handle the leak, maintain her relationship with her husband Cob and hold onto her career with the help of her best friend and manager Naomi.

According to Sky the show is about the moment "the mask slips" and asks if any of us can survive being truly "known". Speaking about the series at Sky’s Up Next event, Piper stated, "It was a culmination of many conversations about what it’s like to be a woman in your thirties, which feels radically different to what it felt like to be in our twenties. We wanted to shine a light on that in a way that felt very true and authentic and exposing."

Is I Hate Suzie based on real life?

In the series the character of Suzie became a cult TV favourite after starring in a popular sci-fi show, so given that Piper made her name starring in Dr Who, people have asked about the obvious similarities between the star and the character. But in an interview with Radio Times, show co-creator Lucy Prebble stated that despite the parallels, the show isn't based on real life and is more about being a "woman in your thirties".

"We were looking at what it is to be a woman in the public eye at the moment," said Prebble. "And though of course Billie can relate to that, many of us can relate to that a little bit – more and more with social media and things like that... Everyone has a profile now, so our character of Suzie I think is quite a relatable character right now."

Following up on Prebble's point Piper told interviewers, "Everybody’s life can be torn apart very easily. It’s something we now all potentially could experience, everything’s potentially incriminating, we all live in a permanent state of anxiety and fear about what is to come… so I think everyone can relate to that bit."

Who has been cast in I Hate Suzie?

Aside from Piper in the lead role, the show stars Leila Farzad (Innocent) as best friend and manager Naomi and Daniel Ings (The Crown) as Suzie's husband Cob. The rest of the cast includes Nathaniel Martello-White (Collateral), Lorraine Ashbourne (The Crown) and Phil Daniels (Eastenders).

The Sky original has been co-created by Piper and Secret Diary of a Call Girl writer Lucy Prebble, who has also been a writer and producer on Succession.

Speaking about reuniting with Prebble, Piper said, "It’s taken years to finally get Lucy, my long-term GF and favourite writer in London – to work with me again. We feel we’ve created something timely and not for the faint-hearted. If you too suffer with anxiety, shame, compulsive lying but like a laugh, please tune in at some point."
