Bills sign head coach Sean McDermott to reported 6-year extension

The Buffalo Bills have signed head coach Sean McDermott to a contract extension.

The team announced the news Wednesday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the deal is for six years through the 2025 season.

“Sean’s leadership on and off the field has been nothing but genuine and transparent, qualities we appreciate as owners,” a statement from Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula reads. ... “We are happy to extend his contract and keep him in Western New York for many years to come.”

Newfound success in Buffalo under McDermott

McDermott joined the Bills as head coach in 2017 after eight seasons as a defensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles. In three seasons, McDermott has coached the Bills to a 25-23 record and two playoff appearances. Their wild-card berth in 2017 was the franchise’s first playoff appearance since the 1999 season.

Under McDermott’s leadership, the Bills have posted a top-three defense in each of the past two seasons. With the anticipated development of quarterback Josh Allen as he approaches his third NFL season, the Bills are expected to compete for their first AFC East title in 25 years.

The Bills haven’t won the AFC East since 1995, as the New England Patriots have dominated the division en route to 16 titles in the past 17 seasons. Significant offseason personnel changes, highlighted by the departure of quarterback Tom Brady, have opened the door to a new division champion for the first time since the Miami Dolphins won it in 2008.
