'Binge worthy' series labelled 'absolute junk TV' looks destined to be one of Netflix most watched

A 'binge worthy' series that has been labelled as 'absolute junk TV' could one day soon become one of Netflix's most watched titles if trends continue.

The Serial Killer's Wife is currently available to stream for free but history could repeat itself and see it gain a surge of popularity on a rival platform. All episodes can be watched on Channel 5 service My5. The series was originally released via Paramount+ paid for service in 2023 but was added to the free-to-air broadcaster in 2024.

It follows the story of Beth who lives with her husband Tom in the seaside town of Blackwater. They live an ideal life together until Tom is arrested for murder at his own birthday party. Beth initially provides him with an alibi but begins to question her husband as more secrets start to become uncovered. She becomes determined to uncover the truth herself. The show is based on the book written by Alice Hunter of the same name which was the first in a series. It is followed by novels The Serial Killer's Daughter and The Serial Killer's Sister.

The cast includes Annabel Scholey who has previously featured in The Split and Rivals on Disney+. She is joined by Poldark's Jack Farthing and Waterloo Road's Angela Griffin. One viewer simply labelled the series as 'absolutely junk TV' with many others adding that the show was quickly binged.

One, sharing their thoughts online added: "Very good drama, was expecting more episodes but if 2nd series comes out it might answer a few questions. Great watch great actors. Worth a binge watch. Excellent! Binge watched it! Lots of twists and turns."

Another added: "Just finished watching series had an idea in third episode who it could be . Was absolutely shocked at beginning of episode four last one thought she needed locking up. But the twist was fantastic absolutely was not expecting that."

One fan declared that the series is better than recent Netflix adaptations of Harlan Coben works as they said: "Would definitely recommend! The serial killers wife it was exceptional. Thankfully after watching Fool Me Once and the Castaways which were both awful with terrible script and acting! Both so overrated!"

This reaction has probably got some viewers wondering if the series could follow a recent tend and find its way added to Netflix. It would not be the first series to be on free-to-air TV and find a new home on the service. Previous Channel 5 shows have appeared in the streamer's top ten charts after being added to the service, even up to a year after their initial debut. This includes dramas The Cuckoo and Cold Call and even documentary series My Wife, My Abuser Captured on Camera.

If The Serial Killer's Wife follows this path, it could similarly become a hit on Netflix if added to the platform. However, as the series was originally a Paramount+ original production, it is not a guarantee but neither is it impossible as Paramount made films have often found their way to Netflix.
