Bioluminescent Waves Provide Stunning Sight for Beachgoers Near San Francisco

Beachgoers were treated to “electric blue” bioluminescent waves in Pacifica, near San Francisco, last month.

Local photographer Shreenivasan Manievannan said his footage of glowing waves crashing onto the shoreline at Sharp Park Beach was taken on September 20. The waves were seen all along the coastal side of the San Francisco Bay area, he said.

Bioluminescent waves are usually caused by marine algae or plankton.

The phenomenon usually happens during late summer; the algal bloom can be toxic and dangerous to marine life and humans, WebMD says. Credit: Shreenivasan Manievannan via Storyful
