Furious holidaymakers flying from Birmingham Airport today reported queuing for more than an hour to get through security. Passengers described the airport's operation as 'ridiculous' and a 'shambles'.

More than 221,500 customers will be flying from BHX during school half-term this week, airport bosses said today. They admitted the airport will be "busy during this time".

BHX revealed two days ago that it had finished its security hall upgrade ahead of its June 1 deadline - though bosses were still waiting for 'final approval' to scrap its 100ml rule. Once approved, passengers will no longer need to remove liquids, up to two litres, from their hand luggage.

The airport told us this morning that building works were "still going on" even after installing the new security system. On delays getting through security, Worcester man Phil Adams told The Mirror: "It's been terrible. We've been queuing over an hour.

"It's really tiring and hot. We're flying to Orlando for a holiday of a lifetime so this is not the best start."

Mum Hannah Wright said queues were a "shambles" this morning. She said: "Security is a shambles. We've been waiting an hour to fly to Majorca.

"Our son is claustrophobic so it's hard for him. It's put a dampener on the start of our holiday. There is nothing in place for children who might struggle in situations like this."

Holidaymaker Tom, stuck in a queue for security, said online that he only had "10 minutes" before his gate was due to close. He said: "Ridiculous is an understatement!"

He also claimed the newly installed scanners were slowing down passengers rather than making the process more streamlined. Passenger Simon said he was stuck in a "huge" queue for security at 8.24am.

He wrote to easyJet on social media platform X: "Security queue is huge. You advised us to get to airport early, yet you won’t accept bags until two hours before departure, even with staff on your desks."

Agreeing, passenger Jayne Waterhouse said: "Why bombard me with alerts telling me to get to super early due to additional time needed to get through security, but then refuse to accept our bags until two hours before departure?"

Birmingham Airport statement on delays

A BHX spokesperson told us this morning that customers should expect the airport to be busy during half-term. A spokesperson said: “Birmingham Airport has over 221,500 customers travelling out this half-term and, as previously predicted, the airport would be busy during this time.

"Customers are queuing in areas that are unfamiliar to them as we do still have building works going on. The queue for security has been continually moving and our colleagues are in the terminal assisting passengers in the area.”
